This Week’s Playlist
R.E.M. – Daysleeper (from Live at the BBC)
Culture Club – More Than Silence
Tori Amos – Yes Anastasia
Radiohead – The National Anthem
The Smashing Pumpkins – Adore
For reasons I won’t go into (okay, I really liked their music when I was a kid, and gave it all another chance ten years back, even the 1999 album which held up particularly well) I just listened to the new Boy George & Culture Club album which is called Life. When the cod-reggae kicks in, you could easily think the band are still comin’ at you from the dirty denim days of 1983. But when Boy George’s old, gravelly voice kicks in, you really, really know it’s 2019. It’s an odd record (why now? Why…bother?) and conspicuously free of anything that could ever be a hit. I guess die-hard fans might like it, a bit… The standout track, by the way, is More Than Silence, because they drop the faux-reggae, pick up the guitar pick, and try as hard as dammit to be U2 circa 2004. Which is a… striking moment.
I’ve also been watching Killing Eve, which is quite simply bloody great. It’s another big win for showrunner Phoebe Waller-Bridge, whose Fleabag is by far and away the funniest sitcom I’ve seen in recent years. It goes without saying that I’ve also been watching His Chibs’ first series of Doctor Who, but that deserves a more nuanced argument before you get my verdict and, well, I’ll get around to it.
In my world, I’ve been tinkering some more with a new writing project (Winterhill’s seventh and final book being long-since finished) and I have some great characters and a great format. As soon as I unlock a great story to launch their adventures, I expect I’ll get around to mentioning that too.
Lastly a big plug for Jon Holmes’ The The One Show Show podcast, which just gets funnier, just gets better each week. This week’s Hallowe’en-themed intro really kicked it out of the park. Well, I laughed. A stupidlot.
Anyway, it’s got real cold out there, so wrap up warm, and give your cats a scritch from me…
